Wendling Quarries, Inc. was recently recognized for their outstanding efforts to be a “Good Neighbor”.  Wendling was recognized at the 59th annual Iowa Limestone Producers Association Convention in the following categories:  Outreach (for efforts in educational settings), Good House Keeping (for aesthetic improvements to property), and the “I Make a Difference” category, where an individual is recognized for their efforts in furthering the image of the mining industry and /or their efforts within their community.

Wendling received the Outreach award for their numerous school visits and school tours, which include all age groups from kindergarten to college geology students.  Wendling also participates in the “Adopt a Classroom” program in De Witt with Mrs. Fuller’s 4th grade class.  This partnership provides a resource for teachers to help with holiday activities, classroom projects, or simply reading books to the students.

Wendling received the Good Housekeeping award for improvements made to the entrance at the Behr Quarry in DeWitt, IA.  This project included the removal of scrub brush and trees, grading and seeding the area, and the addition of an asphalt parking area.  This project includes the use of erosion control stone along a nearby creek bank, and the replanting of trees and bushes at the conclusion of the project.

Wendling’s Property Manager, John Tuthill of Bennett, IA, was the recipient of the “I Make a Difference” award.  John was recognized for his efforts, which included many of the educational activities mentioned in the Outreach award, his contributions to the company in managing their many properties, zoning activities, and promoting positive relations with their neighbors.  John was also duly recognized for his relentless support of the Bennett school programs such as, the athletic booster, music boosters, and his close relationship with the Cross Country Track team.  The Bennett High School principal is quoted referring to John as “Bennett School’s number one fan.”
