Things
are starting to heat up, not only the weather, but also our
workload. We had a very successful July IDOT Letting. The
estimators brought home the bacon. The PCC division got over
$10,000,000 in new work and the Paradigm division got over
$440,000. The bidding was tight, but it felt good to finally
get some work.
The
largest job was Mahaska County in Eddyville with over
170,000 sy of paving. This job is a two-year project with a
lot of work to start this fall. |

Warren County is paving two locations with a total of about
30,000 sy to be paved. Page County is a bonded overlay with
over 70,000 sy of paving. Norris Asphalt was low bidder in the
Greene County project and we will be a sub to them for
Paradigm work to total approximately 82,000 sy. Great job to
all involved!
This
has been a very different year for work than usual. Duane has
been in Wichita since spring reconstructing a one-mile section
of interstate north of downtown (see
pictures). Most of his crews are new hires from the
Wichita area and are doing a good job on a very complex
project. Paunch and crew moved down and are now paving the
first stage. When they come back they will probably do the
Wal-Mart in Oskalooska, 3 miles of county paving in Marion Co.
and the Missouri job before starting Eddyville.
Mike
V and crew have been working in Ames on 6th Street, a very
staged and difficult project with a lot of utilities. Between
paving 6th Street, Cortney has done one Boone project and
Sully. They have two more Boone jobs; Story City, Baxter, and
Cedar Rapids Airport. They will probably head for Wichita for
the second phase of paving sometime in October.
Brian
and the crushing crew are in Troy Mills crushing for WQI (see
pictures on left). They will then head to Coralville to crush
recycle for Phase 2, then off to Greene County to Paradigm for
Norris.
Little Kenny and crew have finished Phase 1 of the
Coralville project (see pictures on page 8) and are helping
Chico’s crew until Phase 2 is ready. Jeremy and crew have
been all over, Ames, Boone, Lee Co., helping where needed.

Monte
has been home recuperating from surgery; both of his crews
have been busy. Larry and crew have finished Sully and moved
to Boone. Scott and crew have been busy in Ames on 6th
Street and 3M.
Steve
and Marvin and their crews have been busy maintaining and
running the portable plants. In the next few weeks they will
be setting up plants for Cedar Rapids Airport, Marion Co.,
and Warren Co. Steve will also be helping Bard with their
plant in Dubuque.
We
have also loaned some of our people out. Lonnie and crew,
after fine-tuning Hardin Co., have been helping Kurt with
the reclaiming. Ron Price and Brock Buck have been helping
Illowa in Durant.
As
you can see, our plate is filling up and we should have a
very busy rest of the season.
As
most of you are aware, we now have first cost insurance with
very high deductibles. So far this year, we have been very
safe and our claims have been pretty good. Please read Nancy
Ollinger’s article on page 9 for the specifics.
History
has shown that around the first of September we start having
more incidents and claims. Let’s keep safety at the
forefront and be careful the rest of the season. It takes
all of us working together to be a safe, quality oriented,
productive company.
Have
a great rest of the season. |
