Don't Let Anti-freeze "Freeze" You Up! B.K. Waller |

Over the last few years there has
been a few changes in antifreeze that may have caused some confusion.
Due to environmental concerns, the manufacturers needed to be able to
run longer service intervals, changing from the current 3-year/30,000
mile interval to what is called “Fill-for-life” or “Extended
Life”.
This new antifreeze is commonly called ELC or Extended Life Coolant. There are two formulas of ELC on the market and that is where a lot of confusion lies. You will now find Non-Organic and Organic Ethelyne Glycol based antifreeze in our equipment, with the Non-Organic variety being available in both conventional and ELC. Before adding or changing anti-freeze we must identify what is in the equipment so the correct anti-freeze is used. To help us identify what is in the equipment, the anti-freeze manufacturers have established industry wide color codes, the coolant is dyed from the factory and will only change color if contaminated. GREEN - This is a conventional, non-organic antifreeze. It will be found mostly in older equipment. This antifreeze should be changed every 3 years. PINK - This is a conventional, non-organic, ELC coolant. It is found in a lot of the Mack trucks. ORANGE - This is an organic ELC coolant. It is formulated for Gasoline engines only. It is found mostly in GM vehicles. RED - This is an organic ELC coolant, formulated for both gasoline and diesel engines. It is found in newer Caterpillar equipment. Organic and non-organic coolants must never be mixed together. A thick, sticky gel can develop in the cooling system if they are mixed together. We are currently switching coolant lines so as to be better able to service our equipment. If you have any of the Northland Diesel-Guard or Diesel-guard XL, remember to only use it in GREEN and PINK cooling systems, DO NOT ADD IT TO ORANGE OR RED SYSTEMS !!!When the Northland stockpiles are gone, we will be switching to OLD WORLD FLEET-CHARGE. This is pink in color and can be used in both PINK and GREEN systems. To cover the Caterpillar and GM systems we will be using OLD WORLD FINAL-CHARGE. This is red in color and can be used in ORANGE and RED systems. Both the FLEET-CHARGE and FINAL-CHARGE are ELC coolants, so they can go 500,000 miles or 12,000 hours before they need changed. One final thought to mention, as with all coolants, we need to check the SCA’s (supplemental coolant additives) during our winter maintenance program. These can be checked with either a refractometer or test strips, both of which are available in Brooklyn Parts Dept. and any equipment that uses coolant filters. These must have the NALCOOL (PENRAY) NEED-RELEASE filters installed, filters are pre-charged with SCA’s and only release them as needed. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
