Subdrain/Sealcoat/Stablization
Dave Schinckel

Once again it is that time of year! Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas season is approaching fast.  We were blessed with a beautiful fall and accomplished some projects that would never have been able to do if it had been a normal weather pattern. With the late start this spring; the extended work season was just what was needed to help fill the early gap. We still didn't complete a normal workload as in previous years, but it wasn't a wash out either.

Looking back on the subdrain season, work started on May 7th and ended on November 21st. A total of 613,360 lineal feet were installed. Comparing this to last year’s season of 630,627 feet. I feel this was a respectable showing when the 2001 season started a whole month later than in 2000.

Several of the projects required moving in and out 2 or 3 times which involved a lot of coordination on the crew, trucks, and lowboys. I would like to thank you all for your combined effort in keeping a timely schedule of completion as our commitment as a sub-contractor. Some of the projects that we were involved in this year we’re awarded to us because of our work record. Quoting of projects has gotten down to pennies. When a prime contractor looks at his project as a whole, he is looking at getting it done quickly and efficiently. Sub-contractors can greatly effect how they complete their project.

This coming season of subdrain work looks no different than last year. With the economy still struggling to get back on track, spending is going to be tight. I will be bidding everything that comes across the wire to fill another season. I am optimistic that a full season will once again be achieved for this crew.

The sealcoat crew was kept busy with a normal workload of small town and city projects as usual. A hand full of county work was added as the summer progressed. Several of these counties were stabilization projects and complimented the talents of this crew. One problem, which was a good problem this crew experienced was with scheduling. 3 projects doubled in size once they were started. It's great when that happens, but really tough on keeping committed completion dates. This crew too, knows how to hustle and keep customers satisfied.

One project that is really helping this division out is the Jasper County, Baxter stabilization project. The county engineer is seeing the benefits of stabilization in his county and is keeping Kurt busy!  Due to delays by the grading contractor, this stabilization was started very late. Without the great fall weather this would of never been accomplished. A total of 4 miles out of 7.5 miles were completed on November 21st. Naturally the remainder of the work will be finished next spring and will be a good spring board to kick off on. I am very optimistic on filling this crew up again for 2002 as we did in 2001.

I would like to wish everyone on my crews and all of the Manatt employees a very Merry Holidays and a very healthy New Year!
