This season is just about over. Although the final
numbers aren’t in yet, this looks to be the biggest year
ever for our production of concrete. I thought we were
done in October when the rains started, but after a
couple of weeks, they let up and allowed us to have a
good November to finish the season.
Not bad for a “cement shortage” year. Our suppliers
stepped up for us and kept us in supply. I don’t really
mind a cement shortage as long as our customers don’t
realize we are going through one. I can’t think of a
single ready mix project that was delayed this year
because of lack of cement.
We did, however, take two increases in cement
prices over the year, and had to increase our prices on
concrete in midyear, which we have never done before. I
don’t like mid year increases. I would rather we had a
price for the year and quoted concrete for the year
rather than to change things in midstream. It is hard on
us as well as our customers. I was in hopes that last
year was a tough one and we would get back to normal.
Well, I think I was wrong once before. Already the
suppliers are increasing prices the first of the year
and one has sent a letter out about another increase
July 1. They are saying cement supply will be as tight
next year as it was this past one. I’m sure with the
help of our suppliers, we will have a good cement supply
again next year, and hopefully, the mid year increases
won’t happen.
In any case, next year will be another exciting
one. Opening two new ready mix plants is always exciting
and both Grundy Center and Ankeny are ready to go. They
are great improvements to our Company, replacing aged
plants that needed to be retired. We will continue to
update plants and equipment in the future as the need
arises.
Keep warm, stay safe. I look forward to seeing you
in the spring, if not before.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year. |
