Another year is starting to wind down. It is
December isn’t it?! Looking back over the last season I
feel that overall we had a pretty good year when it
comes to Loss Control. Of course there is always room
for improvement since we are a long ways from that zero
incident goal of mine. Unfortunately we had an oil
tanker and water truck tip over but luckily there were
no serious injuries. It makes you wonder how long we can
continue to stay “Lucky” doesn’t it? We also had 3 or 4
serious injuries where we had employees that weren’t so
lucky. We had more incidents reported this year than in
the past which I attribute to better reporting by the
Supervisors which will help us identify our problem
areas. But the good news is that our overall Loss
Control cost is lower than it has been in the past few
years. We seem to be improving very slowly but we are
improving.
Now we are moving into the time of year when we can
evaluate the previous season and take the time to
improve on our losses by training and educating our
employees on safety and loss control policies and
procedures. We need to step up to the plate and make the
changes and do the training that will take us to the
next level so we can drastically improve our safety
program.
Along those lines I want to let everyone know that the
tentative dates (yes it says dates) for the Supervisor’s
Safety Meeting are February 8th and 9th
in Brooklyn. I decided to go with two days this year
because we have a lot to cover and I didn’t want to cram
it into one day. If anyone has any topics that they
would like to see covered in the meeting please let me
know. Also if you feel there is a topic that we don’t
cover well enough and would like to have more time for
please let me know.
We also formed two new Safety Committees this last
season. One committee includes Grinnell, Newton and
Colfax Ready Mix Plants and the other includes Tama,
Vinton, Newhall and Belle Plaine Ready Mix Plants. Also
Grundy Center and Laporte City Ready Mix Plants have
joined the Waterloo Safety Committee and Victor Ready
Mix has joined the Brooklyn Safety Committee. I would
like to thank and congratulate all the employees that
have stepped up and volunteered to be on the Safety
Committees throughout the company.
The Ames Division went for over 500 days without a
lost time incident this last season. Congratulations to
the entire Ames Division for that accomplishment.
Also I would like to congratulate the entire ready mix
division for going well over a year without tipping over
a ready mix truck. Keep up the good work.
