It all started when
my brother Brent and I would come over to work with Dad
at Tama on our summers off from school. He always had
chores for us there, but we usually ended up fishing or
swimming or following him around asking for change for
the pop machine. I decided that this would be a pretty
neat place to work at and started for Manatts full time
in 1983 working under Dad at the sand plant operation in
Waterloo. Since then I have had various other duties –
operating the loader at Tama for a few years then
working as mixer driver for a few more years before I
accepted the assistant manager position there. It’s not
always been easy working side by side with my father,
but we seemed to get along
almost all of
the time. There have been a lot of headaches and
struggles along the way, but there was a lot of
enjoyment too!
He has taken a lot of pride in working for Manatt’s and
Wendling Quarries, and the companies were often subjects
at our family get together with my brother Brent, Dad
and myself working full time for Manatt’s as well as my
mother, my wife and a couple of sisters part time here
and there. We will miss his advice and knowledge of the
business here – but he assures me he will just be a
phone call away.
I think he will enjoy being away from the daily hustle
and bustle but will miss the faces and people he has met
throughout the years that he calls his friends. He will
continue to work part time for Wendling Quarries and
stop in at Tama from time to time.
Dad has been a dedicated employee who has put his job
ahead of some of the joys in life, and I would like to
say, “Congratulations on a job well done!”
