Third graders from Wilkins Elementary School visited our Robins Quarry on October 14th.  There were two busloads full of students, teachers and a few parents that took a tour of our quarry.  They were also fortunate to get the opportunity to watch Manatt’s Concrete Recycling Plant in action.

Prior to the third grade classes’ visit, the students spent many hours in class learning about rocks, minerals, and of course, fossils! The field trip began with John Kulper giving a brief background about our operation and in the process John was able learn how much the kids already understood about rocks.

Once the bus was loaded our first stop was to find out how much the bus weighed.  The guesses ranged from 50 lbs. to ton.  They did

their best, but no one was even close. Our second stop was a birds-eye-view of the Manatt’s crew hard at work.  At our last stop everyone was able to get out of the bus at the portable crushing plant to meet Russell Heinsius, their official tour guide.  As usual he had several difficult questions to answer while explaining our mining operation: “How many people can fit into the quarry?” “How many years did it take to make this quarry?”,  “Is this a fossil?” and a girl asked while holding some fine dust off of the quarry floor “Is this the same stuff we use to bake with?”

Again, another successful field trip, and as usual we have a number of kids who can’t wait until their next visit!
