These pictures are of an experimental
stabilization project on part of the new Highway
34 project east of Batavia. This project was
paved 2 years ago. They have been having
problems with the shoulders being very soft.
They installed subdrains at the time of
construction but they seem to never dry out and
firm up. Since it has been opened to traffic
they have had to pull 3 semis out of the
shoulder as they bury themselves right up to the
axles when they pull off on the shoulders. In
early October, Virg and the crew went down and
stabilized 4 sections with fly ash as test
sections to correct this problem. If the results
meet with Dot expectations they will let a
larger project this winter to reconstruct the
entire projects shoulders. |
