At
the start of this season we were wondering if we could keep
enough work ahead of the crushing plants. With only a few weeks
left to finish 2002, the sales staff has done a wonderful job
keeping our guys crushing. We will be crushing to Christmas shut
down as long as the weather permits.
This
year the crushing crews worked about 1400 hours less than last
year, but our crushed tons are going to be real close to the
same as last year. Our over all adjusted ton per hour is up, as
well as our ton per man hour. Hopefully, after all the winter
repairs are totaled, our cost per ton will be down. This is the
kind of team effort that is needed to survive a slower year.
Hats off to all the crews. Of course, without the support from
the shops, quarry development, and lowboy department this would
not be possible.
I
have been reading the proposed road construction bulletin the
state publishes. In the next five years, there is a lot of
highway 30 work coming up, or at least proposed, so don’t let
these 40-45 hour work weeks become a habit. Soon enough the
50-70 hour weeks will be back. {Can’t wait!}
The
wash plants are still out there running also. It seems like,
every year, I rob the men from their plants to help out in other
areas, thinking that there is plenty of time to finish washing
where needed before the weather turns cold. For some reason, it
seems like I am always 3 weeks off. Sorry guys. Maybe next year
I will get it right.
We
have had another good rip rap year. I have had Steve Boisen, and
Sam King busy all year. They have been from Montour to Mt.
Carroll, IL and a lot of quarries in between. Currently they are
at Joinerville. Sometimes I wonder what keeps Steve from
becoming cross eyed staring at that hammer all day. Whatever it
is you do Steve, keep it up. With the heavy flooding the last
couple years, I think we will have a lot more to produce.
I’m
looking forward to seeing you all at the Christmas party!
Have
a very Merry Christmas,
and Happy New Year everyone!
