It
looks like winter weather is here early this year. I know it
was a bit of a struggle to get our work done this fall,
especially in late October.
At
the beginning of the year, at our employee safety meetings, I
expressed concern about our workload for the coming season and
told them to be ready to help out on jobs they are not
accustomed to doing. I appreciate everyone being versatile,
working together, and helping out on other crews to finish out
the season.
Larry
Sammon’s asphalt crack sealing crew did a little CRS-2
emulsion crack filling in the spring and a lot of PCC joint
sawing and sealing at the Shenandoah and Belle Plaine Airports
in addition to 6 weeks in West Des Moines to end the year. I’m
sure the airport work was a piece of cake compared to working
on the busy streets in West Des Moines! It took a lot of
patience and nerve to set up traffic control and work every
day on those streets, especially in late October.
Bill
Miller’s asphalt crew helped out doing a few PCC joint
sealing jobs throughout the season and ended the season
helping Larry Senger with a couple of Emulsion crack filling
jobs in Muscatine County and Cascade.
We
had some nice asphalt work in the city of Muscatine and a
couple of jobs in Wilton, however asphalt tons were down from
previous years.
Terry
Travis and Jake Boyer are currently getting ready to bid some
work at the December letting. They look forward to having more
asphalt work to bid and do in 2003 around the Muscatine area.
I
want to thank everyone for having a very safe 2002 work
season. Continue to be safe in your Holiday travels and
whatever you do this winter.
A
special thanks for helping this season goes to Curt Manatt and
the guys in West Des Moines for helping out Larry Sammon.
Also, thanks goes to Bob, Don, Dale, and Steve in Newton; Jim,
Dean, Elmer and everyone in Brooklyn; and Wendell, Ron, and
Karen in De Witt. I know I left some people out, sorry! We’ll
be in Ames next Spring Tom!
HAPPY
HOLIDAYS!
