My
first full season as Safety Director for Manatt’s, Inc. has
come to an end. Boy, what a year! It was just as much of a
learning experience for me as I’m sure it was for the
employees.
There
has been a lot of improvement in the Safety Culture at Manatt’s,
Inc., but we still have a long way to go to live up to our new
mission statement, which is: To Safely
Do Every Job We Do Better Than Anybody Else.
I
have heard many times that Manatt’s, Inc. is a big company and
therefore “stuff” is going to happen. Well, I don’t agree
with that statement at all!
Manatt’s,
Inc. is comprised of many divisions, with many different levels
of management, and if each employee in a management position
would do their job correctly, it would just be a matter of
making sure that “stuff” doesn’t happen to these smaller
groups of employees. This would, in turn, decrease the overall
incidents throughout the company.
The
supervisors in this company are divided into two categories: 1)
Managers - who lead by example, follow company policies and are
concerned about the company and their employees. 2) Producers -
who somehow got into a management position but their concern is
production at any cost as long as they get the big bonus at the
end of the year. Which one are you???
If
you are a Manager, then you and your employees should feel good
about winning a safety check, or cashing in your safety points.
I congratulate you and your employees because you will be the
people that lead this company to the next level.
If
you are a Producer that feels that you don’t need safety
equipment, or need to follow company policies and you accept a
safety check or cash in your safety points at the end of the
year that you really don’t deserve, don’t you think that’s
the same as stealing?
Unfortunately,
the producers in this company will hold us back from going to
the next level because all they care about is themselves. You
know who they are. It’s the employees that you hear saying “I
don’t like wearing hard hats” or “I don’t need work
boots”. It also includes those who have employees who do
unsafe acts just to get the job done. Here’s my favorite, “if
you make me wear it I will quit.” Again, which one are you?
If
you’re actually a “Manager” then you would be able to see
“The Big Picture” and realize that it’s not all about you
and that there are hundreds of other employees’ well-being
that needs to be considered. You will be willing to listen and
learn from the experts at your disposal even though you don’t
always agree.
To
move this company forward the “Producers” need to learn how
to manage and, most of all, become leaders. Just because you
have a title doesn’t make you a leader!!!
So,
the question is, are you going to continue to steal from the
company or do you want to be a leader and help the company
prosper and grow by going above and beyond what is expected of
you and your employees???
To
the leaders, and prospective leaders out there, I want to extend
a challenge to you to step up to the plate and strive for an
injury free year next year.
Remember:
We all have excuses and rectums, but no one really wants to hear
either one!
Happy
Holidays and have a safe winter!
