There
is a chill in the air. It’s feeling more and more like fall every
day. The construction season is almost over for us, and the annual
equipment maintenance programs are about to begin. We had a big push
at the end of the year that was shortened by the early November
rains. October was most likely the biggest month we have ever had as
far as concrete production, and I think it would have continued in
November, if it hadn’t been for the rain and colder temperatures.
As
of this time, we have not had a major accident this year.
Congratulations to you all for a job well done. Safety works and
safety pays. We have however, had many small mishaps and they can
turn into large ones if we aren’t very careful. So please don’t
lose sight of the safety concerns. We can all get better and work
safer. Let’s continue next year with no major losses and try very
hard to eliminate the small ones as well.
The
year started out on the slow side. In fact, I didn’t think we
would ever catch last year as far as concrete production goes. But,
with the October we had, we finally caught and surpassed 2002. I’m
not sure yet, what November will bring, but things really started to
look up some last month. Right now, next year looks to be slow
again. We will have to work a little harder trying to get the work
and keep it. The guys are quoting a little tougher, but it doesn’t
end there. We have to watch our costs where we can to try to
maintain our margins and maybe even improve them. The most important
thing we can do is to take care of our customers. If they aren’t
happy with our service or our product, they won’t buy from us.
Work is too hard to get to upset someone, or give them an inferior
product and chase them off to a competitor. We have to continue to
work together, moving trucks and people to where the work is so we
can provide whatever our customer’s need, whenever they need it.
We did a good job of this last year, but like safety, we have to
keep it up. Always remember, no matter how hard we work, all the
good things we’ve done can be wiped out with one accident.
Enough
of the preaching: Thank you all for everything you’ve done this
past year. Stay safe over the winter months. Have a great Holiday
Season!
