Dad
had three horses racing all summer, Blueintotown, NBA’s Badboy,
and Brooklyn Spark. Blueintotown, which he owns with Royal
Roland, is a two year colt pacer. Nicknamed, Bucky, because of
a nasty case of buck teeth, ‘Blue’ struggled most of the summer
due to illness. Bucky won two out of ten races including his
last start of the year at Prairie Meadows in Altoona.
NBA’s
Badboy had great success this year. He started racing during
the winter months in Windsor, Canada; Chicago and
Indianapolis. Then he joined his stablemates on the Iowa fair
circuit, where he dominated his aged trotter division for the second
year in a row. He broke and owns the track records at
Humboldt, Bedford, Kahoka, and Eldon. Nicknamed Rodman, he won
nine out of twenty starts and made over $14,000.
Brooklyn
Spark had another successful year, capturing her division
championship once again. She battled a horse that is trained
by one of Chicago’s leading trainers all season. She won six
out of fifteen starts and earned over $19,000 raising her lifetime
earnings to over $37,000. On a Friday in late July, she broke
the trotting track record at Kahoka, Missouri, the previous record
stood for 18 years and was set by Grandpa Junie’s Brooklyn
Jet. Her record only stood for two days and was broke by
NBA’s Badboy. Dad sold Brooklyn Spark earlier this fall and
she is currently racing in California.
Dad
recently bought into a horse that is racing in Chicago named
Callmebea. Three days after he purchased her, she won,
bettering her personal best by seven seconds. Dad has been
busy restocking for next year; he has purchased two yearlings as
well as a pregnant mare. The mare, Amy Amy, which I own a
portion of as well, is a half sister to Brooklyn Jet. We hope
to raise and race her baby.
My
brother, Jonathan, who works for ready mix quality control made his
ownership debut during the summer. He owns Brooklyn Damage
with Leann Pederson of Grinnell. Nicknamed Crash, he started
the year off strong with a win in his second start. Then he
caught a virus and missed the majority of the season, only racing
eight times. Jonathan is already looking at buying a yearling
to race next year.
Cousin
Clint Rhoads is a former employee of the PCC Paving Division and is
currently operating Rhoads Concrete. Clint had a trotting
filly racing this season, Applepucker Anny. Anny had injury
problems most of the summer and only raced nine times, winning just
over $2000 in purses. Clint has sold Anny and has purchased
another horse for next year.
I
own Brooklynagain with cousin Cliff Rhoads and Nick Roland.
Nicknamed Daisy, she was the runner-up in her division in
2002. We had high hopes for Daisy again this year, especially
after she won her first two races. She raced well until
August, when she broke a bone in her leg. After that
unfortunate injury, we purchased a two year old filly, Delorian
Falcon. Delorian proved to be a great buy. Her first
start she got third, and then ended the season on a 4 race winning
streak. She won the Keith Hopkins Final at Prairie Meadows in
October and posted the fastest time of the year for an Iowa bred two
year old. Brooklynagain has had surgery and is
recovering. We plan to race both horses next season.
It
has been an enjoyable and successful season. We continue to
carry on the harness racing tradition that Grandpa Junie shared with
us.
