It’s
the end of another successful season. Like so many others this time
of year, I spend time reflecting on the year past. We have had a
good safety year; we have room (and plans) to improve, but is has
been good nonetheless. The measuring tools that the insurance
industry uses to grade us shows that we are a safe company.
Why
is this important?
First,
it’s a report card. It is telling us that we are doing a good job
and have experienced fewer losses then would be expected for a
company of our type and size.
Secondly,
it is a calling card and selling point. If we are competing with
another company and have a much better safety record, we are more
likely to come out on top. As a matter of fact, some companies
require a specific “grade” (experience modification or loss
ratio) to be eligible to bid on a job. We can’t let ourselves be
excluded from competing.
Lastly,
it is calculated in our insurance premiums. Insurance is not cheap
and money spent on it could be going towards equipment, tools,
maintenance, company functions or into a special fund we each like
to call our bank accounts.
Insurance
companies want us as a client because we are considered a good risk.
THANK YOU, AND PLEASE CONTINUE THIS EFFORT.
As
I reflect I would like to recognize each crew that has had an MSHA
inspection without receiving a citation. I know that many times we
feel like the inspector will not leave without writing some paper.
Let the following list deter you from those thoughts and encourage
you to continue working toward being on this list yourself.
Tim
McPherson’s Crushing Crew no citations since 2001.
Terry
Adler’s Wash Plant had no citations since 2001.
The
Dredge Crew (Neil Shaull & Dean Paup) no citation this year.
The
De Witt Shop had no citations during their second inspection this
year.
The
Moscow Plant and Shop (Shawn Skladzien – Supt) also had no
citations during their second inspection this year.
As
amazing as going without a citation might seem, it is possible. The
following crews did not have an accident or injury (other than first
aid) this season:
What
an achievement. Keep up the good work!
Now
we must look forward. Yes, you will see new initiatives for this
coming year. We must never settle for what we have but work to
become better. You are either moving backwards or moving forwards.
Make it your priority to be safe and citation free in the coming new
year.
