It is so
difficult for me to create a news article for our quarterly
newsletter when things just aren’t going our way. The State of
Iowa, our biggest customer, has cut back their concrete paving
and asphalt paving almost in half. This impacts every aspect of
our business; milling, subdrain, shouldering, etc.
We have geared
ourselves over the years to be the best we can be in everything
we do. Our equipment is very current and high production. We
have a new truck fleet for hauling materials that is 1991 or
newer. Our employees are thinking production, quality, and
safety every hour of every day. It is frustrating to get to this
point and find us being hampered by a real slow down in our Iowa
economy.
On top of the
slow down, what we are seeing is way too much rain on top of the
work we have on the books. The moisture has slowed all aspects
of what we do, from rock sales to ready mixed concrete sales.
All areas are very slow this year. In fact, it looks like almost
a 40% reduction in concrete sales this year. That is a big down
turn.
Through May, we
are financially in the hole as far as we have ever been. We are
not getting a good start on the year, due to the light workload,
rain, and higher fuel costs.
I place no
blame on any operation within the Company. I only ask that you
continue to work smart, figure out ways to do your job cheaper,
and be an ambassador for the Company and help us find work. Help
us sell a load of rock or a yard of concrete. Every sale helps
in a lean year. And this will be a very lean year.
I’m sorry for
not being more upbeat. I know before the construction season is
over, we will have a very good year. We usually do. And I am the
biggest optimist the company has. Our competition has the same
problems.
Work safe this
summer and prevent needless accidents. Thanks in advance for the
help.
