Newton Asphalt News
Donn Eide

Here it is the middle of June and we finally finished Benton County overlay.  It was 36,000 Ton of HMA and 12000 Ton of shoulder stone.  The week of June 11th, Denny Pfantz and the laydown crew shouldered while Curt Chambers and crew moved the plant.

Butler County is next on the list and they started it June 18th.  This job is 30,000 Ton of HMA.   If the rains slow down from what we have had, it should be done somewhere around the 4th of July.

From Butler County we move to Greene County to do around 35,000 ton of HMA on Hwy. 25.  We then move to Wright County for 21,000 Ton and on to Keokuk County for another 36,000 Ton.  After Keokuk if we haven’t picked up any new work we will move back to Greene County and do the work on Hwy 30, which is around 51,000 Ton.

The Commercial Crew has been busy this spring.  They have done a lot of jumping around trying to be able to work.  Some of their jobs were on natural subgrade so they had to do them after a couple of days of sunshine and it seems that it has been difficult getting more than 3 days without rain.

Some of the jobs, Dale McCammant and his crew have done were a parking lot and tennis court for the City of Colfax, Arbor Lake Apartments in Grinnell, Street resurfacing in Kellogg, Correctional Release Center and they have a widening job in Iowa county.

The job in Iowa County should be ready to be resurfaced around the 26th of June.  We have a job for the City of Newton, which is milling and overlaying numerous streets.  This job is around 8,000 Ton.  In the June letting we got a 17,000 Ton Asphalt job in Poweshiek County that is part of a P.C.C. job Duane McDonald picked up.  We also have a bike trail to do from Grinnell West to the Poweshiek, Jasper County line.

This work should keep us busy to about the end of August.  We still need to find some more work to finish out the season.

As I take pen in hand to write this article it is raining outside as it has done quite a bit of the construction season so far.  I am not going to say much more about the weather figuring the rest of the newsletters will probably have something to say how it has slowed everything down for them.

We have all four milling crews working at this time in all different areas of the state including doing some projects in Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Dick Prusha’s crew at this time is doing a sizable job in the Baxter area. It will take 2 to 3 weeks to complete the largest part of that project.

Jim Dommer’s crew is in the western part of the state for about a month doing projects for various contractors in that area.

Phil Maddison’s crew has been mostly doing widening projects so far this year in Franklin, Clinton and Iowa counties.

Wally Kalinay’s crew has been busy doing work in Waterloo, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and other places throughout the state.

We have approximately 95 projects on our job list so far with about 55 of them already completed.  You can see that with 4 very capable crews in the field it takes a lot of work to keep them busy for a construction season.

Bob Morton and myself have kept busy with bidding every project we can find that has milling, pavement removal or widening on it.  So far this year it seems that most of our work is county work or city work.  We have not acquired many projects on IDOT state lettings.

Bob Morton has been busy trying to co-ordinate schedules for the crews and this is a full time job especially the way that things change from day to day and hour to hour.  He is doing a wonderful job at trying to get milling machines to all of you when you need them and all the help you can give him in this matter would be greatly appreciated by both Bob Morton and myself.
