Today’s paper
claims that we are only two tenths of an inch short of the 1993
total amount of rainfall. We
all remember what that brought to Iowa.
We have had 17.5 inches so far this year and normal is
13. It’s not hard
to figure out why we can’t get any work done. The only bright side of all the rain has been that PCC began
its season with very little work.
Now I am happy to report that we had a very good June
IDOT Letting and the workload has finally changed.
We were
apparent low bidder on three PCC projects that total
approximately $14.5 million of work.
The three include Hardin Co. ($11.1 million), Story Co.
($.8 million), and Poweshiek Co. ($2.1 million).
We also received a subcontract with
Norris Asphalt
Paving worth $.45 million on a Marion County project.
On Wednesday after the letting, we were apparent low
bidder on the Chariton Airport Project for approximately
$200,000. At any rate, it looks like the work is finally coming; now it
has got to stop raining.
Between the raindrops we have gotten some
work done. Mike V
and crew are done with the concrete at United’s Elk Run plant
and have paved out 3 miles in Linn County.
They are now moving to Des Moines to help Metro out.
Paunch and
Dino’s crew have done some small jobs waiting for Jim Shafer
to dry out Victor so we can pave.
Jeremy and crew are laying pipe at
Belle Plaine.
Kenny and crew have been cleaning plant sites and will
return to Elk Run to finish the dirt work.
Lonnie White has been at Independence tearing down the
shop and getting the site ready for a new plant.
Monte and crew
are laying pipe in Webster City.
Brian and the crushing crew are at Wendling Quarries’
operation in Montour.
With the
existing work on the books, a bus barn in Newton, two jobs on
South Dakota in Ames and the new work we picked up at the
letting, we should have a fairly busy
season. If we could
get the rain activity to cooperate, we could have a productive
and hopefully safe one.
