Wendling Quarries, Inc.
was recognized for their “outstanding support and
participation during the 2001 Stay Out – Stay Alive
Campaign.” The
award was presented by Leland Payne of the Mine Safety and
Health Administration at Wendling’s corporate office in
DeWitt, Iowa.
The Stay Out
– Stay Alive (SOSA) program is a joint effort by the mining
industry and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to
educate people on the hazards associated with mine property.
There exist unique hazards associated with mining
compared to other industries, and separating the general public
from these hazards is not as simple as closing and locking the
door behind you on the way out.
Education is the best tool, and the SOSA program is
designed on that exact idea.
In
the past several months, Safety professionals from Wendling
Quarries, Inc. have spoke with more than 500 children during
school or scouting activities on the topic of mine safety.
These activities have taken place in DeWitt and Garrison,
Iowa, and points in between, with more scheduled.
After initially talking about both the industry and the
company in efforts to promote mining in general, the talk always
concludes with information on the SOSA program.
MSHA has provided many nice give-a-ways which include
stickers, posters, pamphlets and bookmarks. This gives the
audience something to take home which continues to reinforce the
message long after the words die out.
Other efforts
in this arena include adopting a 4th grade class from
DeWitt Ekstrand Elementary School, displaying mine equipment
adorned with SOSA vehicle magnets during a Boy Scout/Cub Scout
activity, distributing SOSA bookmarks to local libraries and
reading programs, and posting new SOSA signs at some quarries.
The new SOSA signs were developed in-house incorporating
a downloadable image from the MSHA website, www.msha.gov,
with the Wendling logo, and printed by HI-Res Graphics in
DeWitt. These signs
and vehicle magnets have been shared, with great interest, with
members of the Iowa Limestone Producers Association, and the
Education Field Service Office of MSHA
Wendling
Quarries, Inc. prides itself on being a responsible member of
the communities in which they do business.
This recognition for their efforts in the Stay Out –
Stay Alive program demonstrates their commitment to go above and
beyond in the area of public safety.
