Time passes so quickly and it’s hard to believe the 2005 construction season is upon us in full swing.  Each season brings new challenges that we must meet head on and massage over time because it’ll never be resolved with the advancements in technology that happen everyday.  This can be an opportunity for even the most seasoned veterans to learn something new but for new hires, it may feel like sink or swim.  With teamwork, these new hires will meet and exceed what is expected from them in the first season.

First is our seasonal summer helpers who are both new this year.  They are Lacey Kasal and Emma Ollinger.  Lacey is the daughter of Laurie Hash.  Laurie is in charge of Accounts Payable.  Lacey plans on working all summer so that she can attend Kirkwood College in the fall.  She is undecided on a career path and will take her required courses until something sparks an interest.  Besides working this summer, Lacey plans on spending time with friends, going on a little vacation
and working out with mom in the fitness room.

Emma Ollinger is the daughter of Greg and Nancy Ollinger.  Greg is in charge of our trucking division while Nancy is our Insurance Coordinator with respect to claims.  Emma will work around her

softball and swimming schedule this summer.  She hopes the softball team will have the opportunity to play at state.  This fall Emma starts her senior year at BGM.  Emma will concentrate on her academics so that she is prepared to attend college next year as a science major.  Also, she wants to be a conference champion in the 100-meter backstroke and place higher at the state swim meet.  She is looking forward to the family gathering at Twin Lakes this summer.

Both of these girls will assist their mothers and anyone else who needs assistance.  By the compliments these summer assistants have received so far, they’re definitely hard workers.  We look forward to seeing their growth.

Next is a full-time seasonal employee.  Beth Coover was hired to fill the void when Sherry Knoll went to flag for Steve Armstrong’s crew.  She started May 26 and will learn the materials & truck billing from Peaches Burmahl, department supervisor.  With the number of trucks and jobs we work on in a given year, this can be a daunting task, but Beth is definitely a quick study and is doing a fine job in such a short time period.  Keep up the good work – Beth!

A few facts to know about Beth is she moved with her folks to Brooklyn when she was 4, and has lived here since - except for the time she was at Hamilton College where she received her 2 year business and computer degree.  Before starting here at Manatt's, Inc., Beth worked almost 6 years at the Brooklyn True Value store.  When not working, Beth enjoys the outdoors particularly walking and riding bikes, plus watching her daughters, Rebecca and Marian, play soccer and softball.  This fall Rebecca age 8 will be in the third grade while Marian age 4 will start pre-school.

Last, is the new position in contracts administration, which was filled by Jamie Beaderstadt.  Jamie is the daughter of John Beaderstadt, who works in our IT department.  She will work with Vickie McDonald to learn and understand all the aspects of contract administration.  Jamie graduated with her Marketing Management degree from Hawkeye Community College in May 2005.  As a graduation gift to herself, she went to Florida with a group of friends for a week.  Honestly, I’m surprised she came

back to Iowa after experiencing the water and beaches of Florida.  Fortunately for us, she did, and we are keeping her busy between learning contracts and the phone system.   Away from work, she keeps busy playing co-ed volleyball and softball, plus spending time with her family.

So the next time you’re near the Brooklyn office, stop in, say hi and welcome them to the family.

In closing, here’s to the 2005 Construction Year and in performing your job in a safe manner so that you don’t place yourself or anyone else at an unneeded risk.
