On May 20th, Wendling’s Cedar Rapids South Quarry played host to a group of approximately 60 children from a Cedar Rapids Community School District kindergarten class. The field trip is part of the class’ curriculum in a course about fossils.

The class was first allowed to get out and ogle one of the Quarry Development department’s 40-ton trucks. Then each individual teacher’s class

got off the bus and posed by the rear tires of the truck for group shots. The tour led by CR South Stationary Crushing Plant (Department 405) crewmember, Larry Franck, was then taken down into the pit to learn more about the mining process and the rock strata. Larry was subjected to a round of deep questioning including such classics as “Is there lava down there?” and “Is this a fossil? Is this a fossil?”

All in all the field trip was a great success and they have asked to come back for a fourth year.
