Another season is in full swing. The Supervisor’s Safety Meeting went very well back in February and now it’s time for all the talk of Safety, Quality and Production to be put to the test.

Overall employee use of PPE has been excellent so far this season. Joe Yuhas from Liberty Mutual and I visited job sites and plants on April 27th and 28th. We observed employees with hard hats, vests and safety glasses on when required at all the locations we visited. We even stopped at the Primrose location in Grinnell and “Caught” B.J., Jason, Alan and their entire crew with vests on while they were planting trees. The crew really looked professional and set a good example for all. Congratulations to that crew for going above and beyond. We also noted by our observations that seat belt usage was up to around 95% compared to about 45% last year. This was by far the best visit Joe has had here at Manatt’s since he took over for David Shirley about a year ago. Keep up the good work everyone.

If you see someone not wearing his or her safety equipment or working in an unsafe manner please remind him or her to put on his or her PPE or to work safely. We have had some crews show up this year without the proper PPE due to poor planning. I feel mandatory PPE would help these crews with memory loss have their PPE with them at all times and they wouldn’t have to plan to have the proper PPE with them. Not to mention the bad example they set for the crews that are in compliance.

Our incident rate is not going down so far this year. The Supervisor’s need to get a handle on this by having consistent tool box talks and encouraging their employees to look out for one another. How many incidents is a “Good Employee” allowed anyway?

Thanks to everyone that contributed an entry in the “Near Miss” renaming contest.  Steve “Boat” Slaven’s (pictured below) suggestion of “Close Call” was voted the winner.  Sandy is also looking for Safety Success Stories to put in each Mirror. If you have any Safety Success Stories please send them to Sandy so we can share them with everyone.

   IF YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN!
