On March 17th Wendling had a group of employees
complete a CDL training course. The training
started as a cooperative effort with a class
provided by Manatts. Cal Paup, our Assistant
Production Superintendent, coordinated the
training with Manatts and the Cedar Rapids DMV
office. A search
for a suitable vehicle for our drivers to train
with was next. The goal was to find a truck that
met the requirements under DOT regulations for a
Class A license with air brake and combination
endorsements. That meant the truck had to be
rated at over |
|
26,000 pounds and be capable of pulling a trailer with a gross
weight rating over 10,000 pounds. After asking
our associated companies for a truck, we were
given additional help from Manatts, Inc. We
borrowed a dump truck from them so our drivers
could practice for the driving and inspection
portions of the test. The result of these joint
efforts was to have 11 new drivers with CDL
licenses. That makes for a 100% success rate.
Having properly trained and licensed drivers is
a key component in our ability to stay mobile
and transport our equipment safely from location
to location. Already this year, our portable
crushing plants, dredge, wash plants, and
stripping crew have moved a combined total of
over 30 times.
