It starts out as a typical drive. It is the end
of the day and you have just one stop to make
before you are on your way home. All of a
sudden, you notice something a mile or so ahead
and it just doesn’t seem right. A second look,
and this time you see it clearly, there is a
serious accident in front of you.
That is exactly what happened to John Kulper and
Carmen Billick. The two had spent the day
giving a tour to Vinton-Garrison school kids as
well as visiting several crews delivering the
newly revised employee handbooks. It was close
to 5:00 PM when they left Hess Sandpit on their
way to their last stop, Tim McPherson’s crew at
Bowser. With the evening traffic picking up an
accident would definitely be problematic.
A car in the opposite direction lost control and
ended up rolling several times until it finally
came to a stop facing on coming traffic. John
and Carmen were the first on the scene so John
quickly assessed the situation and pulled the
passengers to safety while Carmen was on the
phone calling 911. Although the car was
completely totaled and the mother and her two
little girls were bleeding and shaken up, they
were very fortunate no one was in critical
condition. The accident could have happened
because of several reasons: the driver was
talking on their cell phone, busy changing the
radio station, or talking to the passengers in
the car and not paying attention. What ever it
was that caused the accident it happened within
a couple of seconds.
With this being WQI’s busy season and each crew
working long hours, when it is time for you to
go home take a little extra time to make sure
that you wear your seat belt and get home
safely. |
