On March 8th, we held our 2002 Driver’s Meeting. We had a pretty good turn out with approximately 90 drivers attending. Hopefully, we can get all of our drivers here next year. There is a lot of good information brought out at these meetings and I think all of us benefit from it, not just the drivers. I started the meeting with some changes in how we are going to pay drivers in the trucking department. We will no longer be giving across the board pay raises; they will be based on performance. We will be collecting good and bad information during the year. At the end of each season, we will do an evaluation on each driver. Drivers will be put in one of (4) different categories. When spring raises come, they will be based on which performance category the driver earned. These evaluations are meant to be a tool used by both management and drivers, so that we can improve on safety and performance. I believe that we all have the ability to do a better job than we are currently doing. Hopefully this will help! Mike Manatt gave a brief overview of our upcoming work, the Corporate Retreat in Arizona, rising insurance costs, and how this can affect our ability to bid and get jobs. Burt Ostert talked about safety issues. Officer Kevin Smith with the Iowa DOT covered Commercial Drivers License (CDL) qualifications and disqualifications. CDL drivers fall under a lot stricter rules and regulations than the average person with just an operators license. There are some violations where a CDL driver could lose his CDL for life on his first conviction. David Shirley with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. had an interesting program on Decision Driving. This program covered what to look for and how you should react to different driving situations. We discussed several actual accidents and what could have been done to avoid them. He also covered some of the problem areas that Manatts had last year. Jon Peterson and Mick Vana from Michelin Tire discussed proper tire maintenance. The rest of the afternoon was spent on company matters, speakers were; Dan Boyer, Nancy Ollinger, Becky Edelen, Bev Vaverka, Frank Heinen, Dwight Triplett, Elmer Anderson, and Bruce Loving. Gene Manatt made a few closing remarks, then we got on to the part everyone actually comes for, the prize drawing.
Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting and to those who helped. Have a safe year.
