Improvements Made in Ames this Winter

Don Stevens

Another construction season is nearing. We have over 50,000 tons of asphalt carryover from last year, so our spring is looking good. We’re looking forward to picking up a lot more and there are some interesting projects in the works.

Bidding has been slow up to now, but it looks like we’ll have a lot to bid in March in Ames. Recently, we picked up a nice job at Iowa State University and have bid some subdivision work in town. Iowa State University has some good work coming up, the city of Ames still has projects to let, and the subdivision work is still coming in. Hopefully we can land some of these projects and some projects in the next letting.

Some improvements were made this winter. Brian Novak and company came into town and crushed some RAP and crushed concrete for us. Brad Lenz and crew installed some fiber optic line between the ready mix plant and the main office in order to get the new ready mix systech system operational. Duane Hassebrock and a few guys are going to do some pipe work to expand the yard. We need the space. Some new equipment this year is a new Cat 420 backhoe for our old backhoe that was burnt to the ground, a new Case 75XT skid loader for Randy Hugens’ crew, a new Cat asphalt roller and a new lowboy for Mark Swanson, and some new pickups for Brad Lenz’s PCC crew.

All in all, things are looking much better than a month ago. Still a little early to say for sure, but there is work out there. Looking forward to a productive, and safe year in 2002.
