Middle & Bottom —Detonating Explosives

On
February 25, 2005 Wendling Quarries, Inc. played
host to a number of local, state, and federal
agencies to help them dispose of explosives. A
week prior, Jim Thiele of the State Fire
Marshall’s office, called to see if WQI could
provide a safe location to assist his office in
shooting explosives that had been confiscated as
a result of illegal activities. The materials
were discovered during an inspection of the
Clinton Fire Department and were impounded in
their evidence locker. The materials had been
accumulating since 1990 and were a safety threat
as the aging materials become increasingly
unstable. A majority of the explosives were
fireworks and supplies to make homemade
fireworks.
The
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and
Explosives, which has recently been renamed to
include Explosives under the Homeland Security
Act, also had explosives that needed to be
disposed of. Between the two agencies three
separate shots were required to rid them of
their wastes. |
