December 31, 2004 was the end of an era at United
Concrete. Larry Potts hung up his United cap. Larry has
been a fixture at United since day one when he and three
partners decided to go into the concrete business as
United Materials. Larry was the plant man and oversaw
the construction of their first plant on Shaulis Road in
Waterloo. That was in 1964.

Larry has been at United ever since. He has been
the general manager for most of, if not all of, those
years. United Materials, and then United Concrete,
underwent many changes over its lifetime and Larry was
responsible for most of them. United was bought by
Manatt’s in the early 70’s and Larry stayed on as
general manager.
Junie was the president of United Concrete after
the Manatt purchase and he always let Larry run his own
show. That showed the respect and confidence that Junie
had in Larry. When I took over as president of the
company, that tradition continued. Not only did I have
the confidence in his abilities, he taught me many
things along the way. Larry and I have become close
friends and allies over the years and I have grown
because of knowing him.
Larry loves a challenge and loves to build things.
When we decided to build a new concrete plant several
years ago, Larry took control again. Everything from the
design of the facility to the final touches, Larry had
his hand in it. A finer, better thought out plant you
would not find anywhere. But that’s the way Larry does
everything he does.
Larry has had several hobbies over the years,
including rebuilding old cars, flying model airplanes,
work, cutting wood for his earth-sheltered home, work
and now he’s looking forward to spending lots of time
fishing with his new boat.
Larry, best wishes to you and Eunice in retirement.
Thank you for your time and dedication that you
have given over the many years. It’s been an honor to
work with you.
