Another season is just around the corner.  The unseasonably high temperature spurts have put the building bug into people in the Des Moines area.  We are anticipating a strong economy due to continuing low interest rates and other economic indicators.  In fact, we will see a couple new guys in town supplying concrete this year.  They are putting much faith in the future economic condition of Des Moines.

Just because it looks like there will be concrete trucks on the road, we still have our work cut out for us.  The increased competition means we will have to work our hardest and smartest.  Trucking efficiencies, preventative maintenance, and sales support are the things that make us better than the guy next door.  We need to focus on these areas this season to ensure that the concrete trucks on the road say Manatt’s on the drum.

The paving crew is going to have a good start to 2005.  With some early season carryover and some housing developments on the books, we are in better position than we were last year at this time.  The ICPA recognized the Metro Paving crew on Badger Creek and the 19th/MLK Pkwy projects.  It is nice to see the guys get recognized for their dedication to quality work and leave the convention with some hardware.  Congratulations to the pavers for their success last season.  We’ll get you the work this year so you can raise the bar even higher.

One of our bigger paving projects is in Ankeny.  We want to hit this one with our new plant in the spring.  The pieces are falling into place and it is really coming together to be a top-notch facility.  When we are finished, we are going to have a showcase of concrete.  Everything from the polished cast on site panels to the stained floors.  Stop by if you are in the neighborhood and have Charlie give you a tour.

Train your fellow workers on ways to work more safe.  Make sure everyone on your crew gets home in the same condition they arrived.  Take the time to fix something if it is not right.  Whether you are the superintendent or the low man on the totem pole, safety is the responsibility of everyone out there.  NEVER WALK BY AN UNSAFE ACT.
