Win a Safety Happens T-shirt & lunch for you and
a friend!
Traditionally, an accident that was avoided
should be reported on an Incident Report and
listed as a Near Miss. Submit your idea of what
to call a Near Miss on the Incident Report
instead of a Near Miss. Call or email Burt
Ostert in the Brooklyn Office with your idea.

Dale Ott slipped on the ice at the
Oelwein plant. His feet flew out from
under him and he landed on his back,
snapping his head back on the pavement.
He indicated that with the force that
his head hit, if he hadn’t had his Hard
Hat on, he would have easily cracked his
head open. Dale enjoyed wearing his Hard
Hat that day! |

At the shop in Brooklyn, Travis Scott
and Ben Blomme were working on a
pickup’s Air Conditioning system. The
process was nearly complete with only
charging the system left to go. When
Travis hit the button that transfers the
correct volume of chemicals from the
storage tanks to the vehicle, the freon
immediately spewed out a loose fitting
and basted our two mechanics. Had they
not been wearing Safety Glasses, vision
would most assuredly been lost or
permanently impaired. It’s a great day
when hindsight REMAINS 20/20! |

Rick Irish, then out of the Newton Ready
Mix, was driving a mixer on a gravel
road in Jasper County and met a grader
coming head on. As they passed each
other, the grader threw a rock that
nearly came through the windshield. Not
only did the rock shatter the glass but
the force sprayed small glass fragments
all over the inside of the cab. Rick
was glad he had his Safety Glasses on!
