Just as with field equipment, in the office we “budget” for updates to our computer equipment. With improvements in available software and changes in technology, an appropriate life cycle for the computers we use may not be any more than three or four years. We are proceeding with a number of significant updates this year.

At the DeWitt Office we will soon be updating our current mainframe accounting hardware to the new IBM iSeries technology. The system will

have more processing speed and more data storage.  It will house, not only our mainframe accounting software and data, but also some of the volumes of other data produced at Wendling by the accounting department and others that generate and use data in making daily and long term decisions. How did we ever do it before?

Our computerized quarry sites will be getting new computers this spring and the asphalt plant at Moscow will be set up to generate and transfer ticket data to DeWitt as well.

Robin Sokol, along with a lot of support from Wendell Wuestenberg, Joyce Paulsen, and others, have “COMMITTED” to getting these tasks done before we get into the heart of our season. There will be issues to overcome related to these updates, Robin can attest to that already, but she looks forward to the task at hand.

So what does Robin do away from work to get away from the frustrations of addressing computer issues all day long: She is taking night classes at the University of Dubuque working towards a Masters in “Communications with an emphasis in Information Technology.

WHAT! Just another computer geek! Well, not really. Robin is also busy with family activities (two teenage children) and rumor has it she hits the dancing circuit in Jackson County, wherever there might be some good country music being played. From our bowling and golf tournaments to WQI baseball outings and Adventureland you’ll see Robin having a good time. With her job, she better let loose on occasion or she will be “COMMITTED”.

We all will benefit from the new computer equipment being installed. Good luck to Robin, Wendell, and Joyce in getting everything to work!
