On April 22, 2004, Wendling Quarries and
Manatts officially donated seven acres of ground at a
dedication ceremony at Wildcat Bluff County Park. The
park is located just south of Urbana and along the Cedar
River.
In addition to the donation of land, fill
was provided by Wendling to elevate the park entrance,
which has historically flooded making the park
inaccessible to campers.
We also leased a small acreage adjoining
the park to the Benton County Conservation Board for a
place where they can put up a home for a permanent park
ranger and his family.
This whole process of donating the land
and arranging for the ranger resident lease was
facilitated by Anita O’Gara through the Iowa Natural
Heritage Foundation.
Tony Manatt performed the ribbon cutting,
which officially open the park for the 2004 camping
season on Earth Day. Articles were published in about
all the local paper and we even got some coverage on
local TV stations. Tony was quoted in the paper saying,
“I’m really excited about the benefits this will have
for the thousands of people who use this park. It’s a
win-win situation, a small gift that will benefit so
many.”
It was a great opportunity for Wendling
and Manatts to give back to the community that we
receive our living from. We each should take a lot of
pride in working for organizations that care about the
communities in which we live and the natural
environment.
