Looks like
another fall is upon us. We
have been busy this year, hard at work trying to complete a lot
of projects before school started.
We were in a crunch for the last month prior to the start
of school to complete a myriad of projects around town that had
to be open by the time the students started back up.
Some of the projects we’ve completed were a parking lot
for the Ames High school, 20th Street which was a
collector street to the Ames high school, a parking lot in Ogden
for Howe and North Middle school, Ames Roosevelt school, and the
Gilbert schools.
John and Randy Hugen and his crew were the main force
behind getting most of these projects completed.
Most of these projects were completed well before school
started, but there seemed to be more than a fair share that were
started late this year.
The 20th street project for the city of Ames
collector program was started just after the bid letting on the
second week in August. We were required to completely replace 5
blocks of this street before August 31, 2001.
The reason the city wanted this street opened up quickly
is because this stretch of 20th Street is the main
access road to the Ames High School.
This project had over 5400 sy of seal coat and rock
removal, 1048 lf of concrete curb & gutter removal and
replacement, 2100 tons of 6” crushed asphalt base, and 2770
tons of 11” hot mix asphalt street paving.
We were able to open 20th street up just one
week after school started as per the required completion.
Another project that we’re just completing is for Story
City. This project
was awarded at $208,850.00 and had 60 days to complete. Brad Lenz with the help of Mark Lamer and his crew completed
the majority of the work well within the 60-day time frame.
They were responsible for removing and replacing a block
of Story City’s downtown sidewalks and work on two other
streets. The new
sidewalks joint pattern was quite involved and took some
coordination and time. This
crew did the majority of work on this project and even delved
into some grading for new parking areas at the local park.
Right now we’re in the middle of working on the Ames
Airport. This
project was awarded at $817,110.00 and started July 24 with a
scheduled completion by September 21.
So far we’re on schedule and starting on the second
phase of work to complete the project.
We used Newton’s mill to remove approximately 4200 ton
of asphalt. These millings were used for the 9” and 11” sub
base under the asphalt. Then
we installed over 3000 ton of asphalt for the new taxiways.
Steve Rooney and his crew graded the taxiways to very
tight tolerances to allow the asphalt crew to do their job.
With our new foreman Craig Kalinay’s, the asphalt crew,
and with the help of Duane Hassebrock, they were able to install
the asphalt under very strict guidelines.
Cindy De La Rosa and Tim Peterson have been very busy
making sure that the special asphalt mix performs to the tight
specifications required by the FAA.
Joel Clayton and his crew installed over 5000 lf of sub
drain along the edge of the new paving and Jeremy Holland out of
Brooklyn was able to put the finishing touches on the project by
finish backfilling the edges for us.
On the sidelines, Shellie Johnson in the office is asking
for information because she doesn’t have all the phase codes
so the guys can get paid.
Also, Brian Peterson and the maintenance department have
been keeping us operational.
I might mention that Larry and Brian Frame with ready mix
have been supplying concrete for us also, but that’s another
story.
This year we don’t have as much work as we have in the
past two years. However,
the work is still coming in and it seems we’re busy as usual.
Thanks to the hard work of the Manatt’s people, we’re
looking at having another successful year here in Ames!
