Computer Training News

I always tease employees that my job is to turn them into as big of a computer geek as I am!  Based on some of the forms and documents that I’ve seen around the office lately, I think some of you are getting there!

I have been here for 13 months and in that short amount of time you all took advantage of 1,114 training hours company wide (including subs)!  Wow!  No wonder some of you seem to be wearing thicker glasses lately!

As we approach the end of the construction season, we start to think about the beginning of the training season for our computer users.

We will be offering a variety of computer classes again this winter.  We’re in the process of researching some new classes, but also plan on offering many of the same classes in Word, Excel, Internet, and E-mail that we’re offered last winter.  If you didn’t get a chance to take advantage last winter, you get another shot!

Some of the newer classes will include 10-key and typing tutorials, Advanced Excel, Word, and PowerPoint features, File Management, Template Creation and much, much more!  Keep your eyes out for the winter schedule!  If you have any ideas for a class you’d like to see offered, I’m always open to suggestions!

This winter we’ll be offering day-long classes (to make it worth your drive) as well as some shorter classes (for those of you with short attention spans!).

Brad would like to remind the Manatt’s, Inc. employees (assigned a computer) that you have until the end of the year to fulfill your 8-hour training requirement.  Most of you have done this, but there are still a few procrastinators!  Everyone will start over with 0 hours January 1.  If you would like to know how many hours you have so far, please feel free to call or email me and I’ll be happy to let you know!

Many of you who have email here in the office already take advantage of some of the great resources on the Manatts, Inc. website.  I’d like to invite our home users the chance to take advantage of these resources as well.

If you have a computer with an internet connection at home, here are some of the resources available to you.

¨       Technology Time-Out:  A monthly newsletter filled with tips, tricks, and computer know-how you don’t have to be a geek to understand!

¨       Monday Morning Coffee Break:  This is a weekly computer tip sent right to your inbox!

¨       Excel Magic:  This is a weekly Excel tip covering all levels!

If you would like to sign up for any of these publications and see what else is available, please visit the Manatts Training Depot!

Happy Computing!

A Note From Nate
Nate Hopwood

This summer has gone by so fast.  It seems like I just finished writing my article for the Mirror last week and now it’s time to write again.

We all found out last week that Ginny is leaving the company to be closer to her family out in Nebraska.  It’s going to be a big transition period after she’s gone.  JC has already told me I’ll be inheriting some big Access databases that run throughout the company.  I don’t know about the Bidtek stuff…it kind of makes me glad I’ve never signed onto it!  Seriously, though, if everyone can work together and communicate, well there should not be any wrinkles that cannot be ironed out.

I’ve been told we are planning on bidding jobs for the October letting from here in Brooklyn.  This is a very big, very exciting step for Manatts.  I’ve never been to a letting before.  Mike implied that it can become quite intense and it would be a good idea for all of our systems to be in good working order for this.  JC promised me a cot for the night that I can set up in my office.

With fall coming sooner and sooner the schedule here in MIS will undoubtedly get much more hectic.  PC’s will come out of the field and have to be serviced for next year.  Those users who have field PC’s or laptops might want to keep a list and document any problems they might have.  I know it’s a busy time out there but having a clue as to what to look for in a PC really helps after everyone is laid off!

Keep working safely and calling back to Jamie, Kevin, and myself with any computer glitches!
