The 2001
construction season is going well on the environmental side.
All ready mix plants received storm water testing kits early in the
season and many have returned the samples but for some reason in
June the rain stopped. Hopefully we will complete this
project this fall. Maintaining the yards on all of the
plants is a very important part of the Manatt stewardship
program and we can proudly say - we rank very high in this area.
The portable ready mix operations have been very active and quite
responsive to the environmental regulations required of
them. Marvin Shaw has done a great job of keeping things
going and making sure all permits are in place as we move around
the state. As always, it's a team effort to meet
the expectations required on the environmental front and no
plant manager can do it without good employees.
We received many positive comments with regards to the portable asphalt
plant this year. Typically an IDNR inspector visits the
plant after every move and in western Iowa I received a call
from the officer talking about records. Each plant, ready
mix or asphalt maintains records that are required under their
air permits. The inspectors look at these records to see
if we are abiding by the criteria in our permits.
Well, the
Atlantic office called and visited about some of our records and
in the course of conversation gave the company one of the
greatest compliments achievable. He indicated that when
they know a Manatt plant is coming to the area, they know that
our managers will do everything possible to not disturb the
environment. He says our records and permits are always
there and that they enjoy having us in their district.
Thanks to Steve and crew, the company can be proud of their
reputation and ability to respond to inspectors.
Lastly, I served on the Asphalt Paving Association Environmental
Committee for the company and over the past three years we have
been meeting to establish "permits by rule" that will
allow the company, as they purchase new equipment that falls
under the rule, to receive an air permit immediately rather than
going through a rather complex procedure that requires about a 6
week waiting period.
Not only did
the committee work on the asphalt plants but because those on
the committee also work for multiple operations companies like
ours, we are proud to say that there will be "permits by
rule" for crushing plants and ready mix plants. This
achievement is a milestone for all of the industries
involved and the IDNR. I can honestly say it was a
pleasure working with the IDNR staff throughout the process and
without a doubt a huge milestone for the industry.
Until next time. 007
