Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
Allen Heintz

It’s been almost 14 months since Brad, Mike and I talked about me taking over the Quality Control Department. There have been a lot of changes taking place since then, and there will be more to come as we grow.

I was not afforded the pleasure or the opportunity to get to know Mary prior to her leaving the Company.  Speaking for the Quality Control Department, I sincerely thank her for the hard work she put in to form the foundation of this department.

We are building as we grow. Several projects are going on. There is a lab at the United Concrete plant in Elk Run. We are still in the building stage of the lab in their new building. All of the testing in the northern ready mix plants will be coming from this lab. Dave Distler and Dave Demuth from Manatt’s and Harold Cavalier from United will be taking care of this area.  I wish to thank Larry Potts, Dave Distler and Harold Cavalier for their help and input in designing the lab and the help to get it done. The goal is to be moved into and running tests by next spring.

The new plant being built in Independence will also house a lab. This is being designed and built with the help of Bruce Suckow and Dave Distler.

At this time, we have all the technicians working on projects. Rita Eichhorst is taking care of the Portable Plant in Ames, which also includes a QMC project.  Derrick Steffany is doing the grade testing.

Joni Linder is working with the Portable Plant in Gibson, and will take care of the testing at the Chariton Airport.

Jeff Thompson is keeping the ready mix plants covered in the southern area. We had help from Jonathan Manatt this summer doing test cylinders in the ready mix plants.

On the Asphalt side, we uprooted Sally Slaven’s lab trailer and set it up in Malcom. She has been doing mix design and plant inspections for the Malcolm plant. During this time, Donn Eide has graciously had a concrete slab poured at the Asphalt plant in Newton to park the lab trailer on when it goes back there.  This should make the trailer level up a lot better.

Larry Clarke and Jeff Jenkins have been traveling with the portable Asphalt plant, taking care of the inspections for Steve Armstrong’s projects. During the slow times, Derrick Steffany has been helping this crew and pushing the profilograph for them when needed.

I wish to thank the Asphalt technicians, especially Cindy Dela Rosa in the Ames lab.  We had Troxler send out a team of people to go through and check our Gyratory machines. They found minor maintenance problems with three of the four machines. The one Cindy had in Ames had a more serious problem. Troxler stood behind their product and replaced the baby Troxler with a bigger new 4140 unit, at no additional cost to Manatt’s. We have had excellent correlation results since.  Drew Manatt has been helping Cindy in the lab with testing. Amanda Manatt has worked in the lab in Malcom with Sally.

In closing, I want to thank all of our technicians along with Dave Schau (WQI), Gary Netser (LL Pelling), Vicki Williams (Norris Asphalt), Larry Wishon (Metro) and Doug Clements and his team (Construction Materials Testing) for all of their help and advice this year.

Continue to have a safe year!
