On Saturday
evening, September 8th, 2001, the Manatt Relay for
Life Team, formed through the Brooklyn office, converged on
Ahrens Park in Grinnell to help raise money and public awareness
for the American Cancer Society.
Among the team walkers were Bev Vaverka, Becky Edelen,
Pam Benishek, Ken and Jennifer Cline, Lori Olson, Jamie and Mark
Kriegel, Lex Alig, Joy Manatt, Mark Heishman, Diane Kilmer,
Elsie Kalinay, Angie Hawkins, Donna Smith, Holli and Curt
Hansen, Susan Kriegel, Jonathan Manatt, Sammy Grier, Cliff
Rhoads, Nancy Ollinger, Ada Douglas, and yours truly, Deb White.
As a result of the fund raising activities, our team was
able to donate a total of $2,749.00 to our Iowa City regional
office of the American Cancer Society.
Our fundraisers included a bake sale, a silent auction,
and a spaghetti luncheon. The
bake sale sold out very quickly on a Friday at the Poweshiek
Bank and raised $311.00. The
silent auction was great fun and topped off at $480.00.
And the spaghetti luncheon (which meals served
overwhelmed even the most optimistic of us!) brought in $906 and
fed 143 people in less than an hour and a half.
Not sure how we did it!
(Probably with the added help of some very willing
employees such as Nate Hopwood, Vickie McDonald, and Roger
Gerard, along with Walda Gustafson who is a member of another
team.) We know we
have identified the kinks in the plan and will operate more
efficiently next time.
Thanks to all the team members who worked so hard to
raise the needed donations to support the Relay for Life.
Poweshiek County teams raised over $70,000 in total this
year, which is a record for the annual event.
This money comes back to the county in patient services,
educational programs, advocacy, and research.
Also huge thanks to Manatts, Inc. for sponsoring our team
and allowing us to use the Brooklyn facility for the spaghetti
luncheon and the silent auction.
We would have not been able to do this good deed without
you. Many thanks
also goes to Jennifer Cline, co-captain, Ken Cline and Joy
Manatt for all the work and responsibility they took on to get
the campsite ready. (And
for staying all night to tear it down!)
Your hard work is very much appreciated.
