Lanham, MD - Manatts
Inc., Ames, IA, received the Ecological Award for a New Hot Mix
Asphalt Facility from the National Asphalt Pavement Association
(NAPA) at NAPA's 41st Annual Convention in San Antonio.
In planning its new
Dayton Road facility, Manatts took care to include features that
would protect the environment and enhance the aesthtics of the site.
Making the facility more attractive are a waterfall coursing over
quartzite boulders, a rock garden, and a decorative pond with
fountain. The facility yard and access road are paved.
Underpinning the
aesthetics are sound environmental practices: Rain runoff is
controlled by grading the site to intakes on the property.
Fugitive dust is controlled by means of paving, a water truck, and a
dust-suppressant agent. The facility incorporates the latest
baghouse control technology. The drum/burn design is such that
neither asphalt cement nor recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) will ever
come into contact with the burner flame. Emissions from the
silos and tower are vented into the burner combustion chamber, where
they are incinerated. All oil and asphalt storage tanks are
contained within a four-foot-high concrete wall. Accepting the
award on behalf of Manatts was Brad Manatt, President.
The National Asphalt
Pavement Association represents more than 750 leading firms in the
Hot Mix Asphalt Industry on the national level with Congress,

techniques used in the construction of roads, streets, highways,
parking lots, airports, and environmental and recreational
facilities. The Association provides technical, educational,
and marketing materials and information to its Members, as well as
product information to users and specifiers of paving materials.
