With just a single Studebaker truck, Junie Manatt starts his own trucking firm in his hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa.
1948
Junie buys a new K-6 International and begins hauling #2 mix from the Flint Crushed Gravel Co. in Tama, IA.
1951
Junie Manatt and his brother Clair join forces in 1951.
1954
The first Manatt’s ready mix plant is established in Brooklyn, IA. A second ready mix plant is added in Montezuma two years later.
1956
Equipment is purchased to begin the road construction business.
1958
After purchasing Tama Sand and Gravel, the company is formally incorporated as Manatt’s Inc. Merlin Manatt, Junie and Clair’s brother, joins the company the following year.
1964
Eight Mack trucks and trailers are purchased to haul 50,000 tons of rip rap for the Red Rock Dam project.
1971
The company purchased ground in Newton, IA, and begins concrete and asphalt operations, completing its first asphalt paving project. The following year, Manatt’s becomes the first company in Iowa to introduce trenching and subdrain on roadways.
1977
The company purchased Cecil Crouse’s portion of United Concrete in Waterloo. The Manatt’s team completes a 100,000-ton shoulder paving project on Highway 30.
1982
Manatt’s expands into the Ames market after acquiring Iowa Road Builder’s asphalt paving assets and ready-mix plant. Along with partner Robins Jackson, the company forms Basic Materials Co. in North Central Iowa.
1983
Manatt’s purchased its first milling machine.
1985
Brad, John, Mike, Tim, and Tony Manatt purchased L.L. Pelling.
1987
Manatt’s buys the ready mix supplier C.W. Shirey Co. in northeast Iowa, with headquarters out of Waterloo, doubling its ready mix footprint. Also, purchased Wendling Quarries and IIIowa Investments Co.
1992
Second-generation Manatt’s family members Brad, John, Mike, Tim, and Tony purchased Manatt’s Inc., Wendling Quarries, and Illowa Investment from founders Merlin and Junie Manatt.
1992
The ready mix plant in Grinnell is built. The company purchased Norris Asphalt.
1993
Manatt’s invents an on-grade recycling system called “The Paradigm” and puts it to use during a PCC inlay job in Jasper County.
1996
The company wins the NOVA Award for construction innovation, thanks to the development of the Paradigm.
1997
Manatt’s celebrates 50 years in business
1998
The company enters the Des Moines metro ready-mix and PCC paving market after acquiring GNA Trucking and its interest in Iowa Paving Contractors.
2000
Company founder Junie Manatt passes away at 73.
2001
The company completes a new state-of-the-art ready-mix plant at United Concrete in Elk Run Heights.
2002
A new 15,500 sq. ft. building for concrete dispatch, tire services, and quality control is completed in Brooklyn, IA.
2005
A new facility is built in Newton with Valley Environmental, capable of storing 500,000 gallons of waste oil used at asphalt plants.
2005
Manatt’s builds the Iowa Speedway and becomes a majority owner of the racetrack. Ready-mix plants are also constructed in Ankeny and Grundy Center.
2006
The company builds a new IT facility in Brooklyn, IA. The Iowa Speedway, a state-of-the-art 7/8-mile racing facility, opens in Newton. One year later, it hosts the Iowa Corn Indy 250, its first major race, drawing more than 30,000 fans.
2008
A new ready-mix plant is constructed in Brooklyn’s north yard. That same year, record rainfall causes major flooding, and diesel prices surge by 60%.
2009
Manatt’s purchased Allied Construction, Allied Redi Mix, and Greene Limestone, forming a new company: Allied-Manatts Group, LLC. The company also purchased Determann Asphalt in Camanche, Iowa.
2010
Manatt’s thanks our nation’s military with five custom-painted ready mix trucks. The trenching division lays over 700,000 feet of subdrain pipe, a new record. And Manatt’s Waterloo gets a new plant.
2011
Manatt’s acquires Flynn Ready Mix in partnership with BARD Materials.
2012
Manatt’s celebrates 65 years in business. The PCC division buys a new GOMACO GHP-2800 paver capable of stringless paving. Manatt’s also acquires Douds Stone from Douds, Iowa.
2012
The PCC division completes the I-680 flood repair project with support from the Des Moines Metro division. The PCC division completes its first single-lane concrete overlay project open to traffic in Chickasaw County. Manatt’s sells its ownership of the Iowa Speedway.
2013
The ready mix division unveils three “Concrete Cares” trucks to promote organ donation, the ALS Associations of Iowa, and the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Iowa.
2014
This year marks the beginning of the transition to the third generation of Manatt family leadership. The partnership of Brian, Adam, Greg, and Tony Manatt leads the company with a commitment to its core values and a dedication to innovation and growth.

Manatt’s acquires Kimm’s Ready Mix in Blairstown. The company makes a significant donation to Grinnell Regional Medical Center to open the Manatt Family Urgent Care Center.
2016
Manatt’s Ready Mix expands into the Quad Cities market, creating the East Ready Mix area. The company acquires the Pella and Ottumwa locations from Skyline to grow its South Area market presence.
2018
Manatt’s completes a major internal project to outline company values—Family, Excellence, and Human Potential—that help guide all employees as the company continues to strengthen.

Manatt's begins partnering with Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates (iJAG), delivering career development programming that includes leadership training, career education, individualized guidance, and employer services.

When it came time to decommission the Sullivan Brothers Memorial drums, Manatt's instead saves them and creates a monument in Waterloo to honor our veterans.

Manatt's celebrates 75 years of continued excellence in the industry. A company-wide celebration is held on the Brooklyn campus to thank all of its employees for their continued dedication to our values.

Manatt’s completes work on a 3-phase overhaul of the I-80/I-35 interchange in Des Moines. These renovations enhance the traveler experience and improve safety throughout the area.

Manatt's continues major reinvestments in its fleet, facilities, and equipment to support long-term growth and better serve its customers. A new 10,000 sq. ft. office space opens in Ankeny, IA.
