Project Overview

Providing safer passage through innovation

The S-14 resurfacing project in Story County focused on improving ride quality and extending the life of nearly 10 miles of existing roadway. Spanning 9.67 miles from the Nevada city limits north to E-18, the project delivered a smoother and more durable driving surface designed to better serve the traveling public and meet the expectations of the Story County Engineer’s Office.

To complete the work, crews prepared roadway transitions by milling header joints at the beginning and end of each phase before placing 3 inches of ST HMA in two lifts across the corridor. The effort required nearly 25,000 tons of asphalt, more than 8,000 tons of shoulder rock, and over 3,600 man hours.

Our Approach

Our crews delivered a coordinated paving operation, combining precision milling, consistent production, and a strong commitment to quality roadway performance.

Crews began by milling header joints and preparing key transition points before moving directly into paving operations across the corridor. From there, work progressed in a steady, coordinated sequence that allowed production to remain consistent while maintaining a strong focus on quality and roadway performance.

Throughout the project, teamwork and communication were key to maintaining momentum. More than 3,600 man hours were invested, with crews working through long days and a full production schedule to keep the job on track. The result was a smooth, efficient operation that delivered a high-quality finished roadway.

Outcomes & Results:

Scope of Work:

Resurfacing 9.67 miles of S-14 from the Nevada city limits north to E-18, including milling header joints, roadway preparation, asphalt placement in two lifts, and shoulder rock installation to improve overall roadway performance and ride quality.

Purpose:

To extend the service life of the existing roadway and provide a smoother, safer driving experience for the traveling public while meeting the standards and expectations of the Story County Engineer’s Office.

Impact:

The project placed nearly 25,000 tons of HMA and 8,000 tons of shoulder rock while achieving a 1.059 pay factor, reflecting strong quality performance across the operation. Favorable weather conditions and steady production allowed crews to complete paving approximately 10% faster than originally anticipated.

Reception:

The project was completed safely with zero incidents, supported by a committed crew willing to work long hours and maintain consistent production from start to finish. The finished roadway delivers improved ride quality and reflects the team’s focus on craftsmanship, efficiency, and delivering a dependable result for the traveling public.

What our employees are saying:

Putting down nearly 25,000 tons of HMA at roughly 3,000 tons a day takes a committed crew and a lot of teamwork. The guys put in long hours, stayed locked in, and delivered a quality project safely from start to finish with zero incidents. I’m proud of what this team accomplished.
